So you are finally ready to sign up for your very first Yoga class! That’s amazing! Perhaps you’ve been doing yoga for a while and you are looking for a change. As your curiosity and excitement begins to build, the search begins….Maybe you ask your friends and colleagues or do a google search? Yoga classes near me? There are so many yoga studios to choose from and finding one that fits can be overwhelming.
Here are 5 suggestions you might find helpful:
1. Credibility
The teacher’s certification and experience is really a must have. Before visiting any yoga studio, check out their website and get a good feel for the teacher’s bio.
2. Class Schedule
Look for class times that are convenient for you and can work around your busy life. Be realistic and be honest with yourself. Set yourself up to get there.
3. Atmosphere and Experience
When you visit the studio for the first time, the teacher should introduce themselves to you and give you a tour of the studio. The studio should feel peaceful, clean and warm. All the props (mats, blocks, blankets, etc.) should be easily accessible, and available to support all levels of students. However, I recommend you purchase your own props such as a mat, a blanket and a couple blocks.
4. Once You’re In Class…
Now that you’re ready to start, first of all congratulations! Many studios offer a complimentary trial class, so be sure to visit as many yoga studios or classes that you can. Yoga class should always begin with gentle breathing exercises in order to slow the mind and get into the body. Does the teacher interact with the students? Is the teacher supportive, warm and welcoming? Finally, music. Music can make or break a yoga class. Soft, calming background music, motivating, upbeat music to help power you through, or perhaps no music at all? Look for what resonates with you.
5. Teaching Style
The studio you choose should have approachable teachers that support you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
I wish you success in finding the yoga studio that is right for you and the teacher or teachers that will help you on this amazing….Namaste.
Extra note: One of my favorite products to help support our wrists are Yoga Jellies! My students have found great relief from wrist pain by using this amazing prop, especially for beginners! You can check it out here.
